NAME

passwd − change log-in password

USAGE

passwd [ name ]

DESCRIPTION

The passwd command installs or changes a password for user name (your own name by default).

It prompts for the old password and then for the new one; you must supply both.  To prevent mistakes, you must then type the new password twice.

A password that is at least four characters long is preferred.  Passwords of a single case (e.g., all lowercase letters) should be at least six characters long. (If you insist, passwd will relax these rules.)

On DOMAIN systems, passwords are kept in the registry files (/registry/*). The password command writes to the registry and then crpasswd(8) builds the /etc/passwd file from the information supplied by the registry.

Only the owner of the name or the super-user may change a password. To change your password, you must first know the old password.

FILES

/etc/passwd password file built from local registry
