Networking

Introduction

T his chapter tells you how to connect BeOS to the network and how to use the Web and e-mail applications that BeOS provides. The first sections tell you how to get connected:

  • Supported Hardware lists the network cards and modems that are supported by BeOS 5.
  • Networking Glossary provides a brief glossary of networking terms.
  • Network Preferences describes the Network preferences application. If you're connecting to the network through the Ethernet, or if you're creating a stand-alone network, you'll use Network to configure your connection.
  • Dial-up Networking describes the DialUpNetworking preferences application. If you're connecting to the network through a modem, you'll use DialUpNetworking.
  • E-mail Preferences tells you how to configure the BeOS e-mail server so you can send and receive e-mail.

The final sections describe the BeOS Web and e-mail applications:

  • NetPositive describes the BeOS Web browser.
  • PoorMan is the BeOS Web server.
  • BeMail is the BeOS e-mail application.
