map2system(1M) map2system(1M)
NAME
map2system - update ASCII files on a NIS client from the standard
server maps
SYNOPSIS
/var/yp/map2system [-m server] [[map1 map2 ...] | transfer]
DESCRIPTION
When commands and library functions access files in Reliant UNIX whose
contents are supplied from NIS maps, the data is generally not col-
lected directly from the NIS server. In order to ensure adequate con-
sistency between local files and NIS maps, the local files from the
NIS maps are updated periodically on NIS clients using cron jobs. The
data is transferred from the standard NIS maps using the map2system
command.
map2system can, however, also be invoked independently of the cron
jobs to update the local files immediately.
The -m server option forces map2system to fetch the data from the NIS
server server. If the option is not specified, the server that is
currently using the client domains is accessed.
map2system fetches the contents of the specified maps and transfers
them to the respective local file. If all is specified as the map name
or if no map name is given, all standard maps are transferred.
ASCII files whose names are listed in the /var/yp/suppressrebuild
file are not updated.
The transfer argument should only be specified on a proxy host, and
then only if this host is to become the network administration host.
The contents of all standard maps are then transferred to the local
files and, in addition, the following files from the maps of the pre-
vious network administration host are created: /etc/yppasswd,
/etc/ypgroup, /var/yp/ypservers, /var/yp/autoupdaters,
/var/yp/netgroup and /var/yp/mail.aliases.
