spray(1M) spray(1M)
NAME
spray - spray packets
SYNOPSIS
/usr/sbin/spray [-c count] [-d delay] [-l length] [-t nettype host]
DESCRIPTION
spray sends a predefined number of data packets to the host using RPC,
grouped in a start and stop packet. The host argument can be either
the name or the Internet address of the host. RPC acknowledgements are
not expected for the data packets. The data is therefore sent as
quickly as is possible with the transport layer used. The host ack-
nowledges receipt of the stop packet indicating the number of data
packets it has received and the time delay between the start and stop
packet.
From this, spray calculates the number of packets rejected by the host
and the data rate achieved based on the number of successfully trans-
mitted packets. These values are displayed.
OPTIONS
-c count
Specifies the number of data packets to be sent. The default
value for count is the number of packets required to make the
total stream size of 100,000 bytes, which is in turn dependent on
the packet length (see below).
-d delay
Specifies how many microseconds to pause between sending each
packet. The default is 0.
-l length
The parameter length is the number of bytes in a data packet.
Since the data is transmitted with XDR encoding and XDR only
works with 32-bit units, not all length values are possible. In
this case, spray rounds up to nearest possible value.
The default value for length is 86 bytes, the maximum value is
8845 bytes.
-t nettype
Specify nettype. Defaults to netpath. See rpc(3N) for a descrip-
tion of supported nettypes.
