NAME
devname - device naming conventions
DESCRIPTION
Specific conventions are used to assign device names. When a utility
requires the devname to be used as a parameter (for example, dksetup),
it requires the device name format described here. This devname format
is not the same as the device node name or file system name for a
device.
Mass Storage and I/O Name Features
The naming convention, described in the sections below, is applied to
each current I/O mass storage subsystem. This convention has the bene-
fit of simplicity of device-path names, consistency between the
differing I/O subsystems and allows for future growth. Each name
reveals the device's physical connection to the system as well as any
specific attributes, such as the rewind device for tapes.
FEATURES
The Reliant UNIX naming convention has the following features:
Physical Association
The name describes the physical device to the user. It uniquely
corresponds to the device, and does not change if I/O devices are
later added to, or deleted from the system.
Large Configurations
The device name accommodates large system configurations with
hundreds of devices.
Multiple I/O Buses
The device naming supports configurations with multiple I/O
buses. It unambiguously includes the bus number. For RM600-xx
computers, the native bus is the System XTEND Bus 0.
Multiple I/O Subsystems
The device naming scheme is consistent across multiple I/O sub-
systems.
Simplicity
The name used to describe the device should is as simple as pos-
sible, with as few physical device descriptors as necessary.
