  NAME

    groups - Displays group memberships

  SYNOPSIS

    groups [user]

  DESCRIPTION

The groups command displays the group memberships for you or for an
optionally specified user. Each user belongs to a group specified in the
password file /etc/passwd, and possibly to other groups as specified in
the file /etc/group. If you do not own a file, but belong to the group
that owns it, you are granted group access to that file.

  FILES

/etc/passwd Password file for all users.

/etc/group Group file for all users.

  NOTES

Only the first 16 groups to which a user belongs are displayed.

  DIAGNOSTICS

The groups command displays the following message if the user on the
command line does not exist in /etc/passwd:

    No such user

  EXIT VALUES

The groups command exits with a value of 1 if a problem is encountered.
