  NAME

    messages - Counts messages in mailbox or folder quickly

  SYNOPSIS

    messages [folder]

  DESCRIPTION

    The messages command displays the number of occurrences of the From:
    header in either the current incoming mailbox or the specified folder.  To
    specify a folder, the absolute pathname must be given.

  EXAMPLES

    1.  In this example, user joe wants to count the number of messages in the
        received folder.  The absolute pathname of the folder in this example
        is /usr/joe/mail/received.

        messages /usr/joe/mail/received


    2.  This example is the same as the one above, except the user is running
        the Elm mail product on a Sun platform and the absolute pathname of
        the folder is /usr/spool/mail/joe/received.

        messages /usr/spool/mail/joe/received


  FILES

    /usr/mail/username   The default mail file which is checked.

    /usr/spool/mail/username
                         The default mail file which is checked for the Sun
                         Elm product.

  EXIT VALUES

    The messages command exits with a value of 0 if successful.  If
    unsuccessful, the command exits with a value of 1.
