  NAME

whatis - Displays summary information on online reference manual entries

  SYNOPSIS

    whatis entry ...

  DESCRIPTION

The whatis command looks up a given entry name entry for a CLIX command,
function, or file in a database in the online reference manual directory,
and displays the NAME line from its online reference manual entry. The
entry name entry is entered in lowercase. If more than one NAME line
exists in the database (for example, if summaries exist for a command,
function, and/or file that share the same entry name), all NAME lines are
    displayed, one after the other.

You can specify multiple entry names on the whatis command line. The NAME
lines for all specified entries are displayed, one after the other.

  EXAMPLES

The following displays summaries for the passwd command and the passwd
    file:

    $ whatis passwd
passwd (1) = Changes login password
    passwd, passwd.local, passwd.yp (4) = System user password files

  FILES
