newprod(8) CLIX newprod(8)
NAME
newprod, makenode - Installs Intergraph software products
SYNOPSIS
newprod [-trfcplvxydmRV] [-b basedir] [-n connstr] [-F prodlist] [-T
tapedev] [selection ... ]
makenode [-trfcplvmRV] [-a archlist] [-n connstr] [-F prodlist] [-T
tapedev] [selection ... ]
FLAGS
The following flags are used with the newprod utility in command line
mode:
-b basedir Specifies the file system given in the basedir parameter as
the base directory for installing software products. A
product list file record contains a directory field that is
relative to basedir. If basedir is not specified, the base
directory for installation is /usr. This flag is not valid
with makenode.
-f Specifies the floppy disk device (/dev/dsk/fl for CLIX;
/dev/fd0 for SunOS) as the source for installation. It is
assumed that a floppy disk that contains a file system is
inserted in the disk drive.
-n connstr Specifies the Ethernet node given in the connstr parameter as
the source of installation. The connstr parameter has the
form node[.username[.password]], where node is an Ethernet
Local Area Network (LANs) address or a clearinghouse name for
an address or is a TCP/IP nodename; username is a valid login
name on the system whose address is given in node; and
password is a password for the login name supplied in
username. Only the node parameter must be supplied when this
flag is used. The newprod or makenode command prompts for a
username if username is not entered on the command line. If
username is terminated by a dot, password is prompted for
with echo disabled.
-p Pipes the display of the available products menu into the pg
command. This is useful for online printer terminals.
-v Displays additional error-logging messages. The verbose flag
also displays the names of files as they are manipulated by
newprod or makenode.
-d or -y Selects default answers to any questions presented by the
product installation shell scripts. These flags are not

newprod(8) CLIX newprod(8)
valid with makenode.
-x Displays the commands executed by installation shell scripts.
This flag is not valid with makenode.
-l logfile Log installation messages in the logfile file.
-F cfg Uses the file named cfg for the product list file instead of
the default (which is ws_s.prods).
-T tapedev Uses the device named tapedev instead of the default
(/dev/rmt/0mn for CLIX; /dev/nrst8 for SunOS). A
nonrewindable device must be specified.
-s Requests shared installation of products. Products will be
installed in the basedir defined by the -b flag.
-V Displays the version number and then exits.
-R Reviews the release notes of selected products instead of
installing them.
-i Specifies that all products should be visible in the newprod
menu. Normally, newprod treats certain products as
``invisible'' products and does not show them in the menu.
-m Turns off multimenu mode.
-t Specifies a tape drive as the source of installation.
-r connstr Specifies a remote CD/ROM at connstr as the source of
installation.
-c Specifies a local CD/ROM as the source of installation.
-D dirname Specifies the local directory dirname as the source of
installation.
-a archlist Specifies that only products for the platforms listed in
archlist should be shown for downloading. The valid platform
names are CLIPPER and SUN. This flag is not valid for
newprod.
DESCRIPTION
The newprod utility installs Intergraph software products from software
delivery media to Intergraph systems. The makenode utility creates a
delivery source on a system. Products loaded on a workstation or server
with makenode can then be delivered in executable form to workstations or
servers using newprod.

The newprod and makenode utilities can be used interactively or through
the command line. When used interactively, newprod and makenode initially
place users in multimenu mode. The initial menu lists product classes.
After the user selects a class, newprod or makenode displays a menu of
available products in the selected class.
The following commands are available in interactive mode:
u Updates selected products. If a version of a product is
already delivered to the the system, the new version of
the product will be delivered to the same location.
U Updates selected products, forcing them to be delivered
to the file system specified by the -b flag or the f
command listed below.
r Reviews release notes of the product at the cursor
(README file).
m Changes menu mode. The m flag toggles between multimenu
mode and single-screen mode. Single-screen mode allows
all available products to be displayed, regardless of
their class.
l Displays the location of products on the system if a
version of the product is already delivered.
p Displays the platforms for which this product is
available. This command is valid for makenode only.
q Terminates the session.
i Toggles display of transparent products. When on, only
transparent products will be displayed.
I Toggles display of all products. When on, all products
(visible and transparent) will be displayed.
v Toggles verbose mode. The default is off.
y, or d Toggles acceptance of all installation defaults. The
default is off. These commands are not valid for
makenode.
x Toggles install script debug mode. The default is off.
This command is not valid for makenode.
z "Pre-processes" selected products. If the product
supports the "preprocess" feature, newprod will run the
installation procedure for the product and save all
responses to installation prompts without installing the

product. These saved responses will then be used as
default answers for the next installation of the
product. This command is not valid for makenode.
Z "Pre-processes" the selected products, but informs the
installation script that the products are being
delivered to the file system indicated by the -b flag or
f command instead of to their current locations.
! Executes a shell command.
f Chooses the file system to which products are to be
delivered.
? Obtains help for interactive options and cursor
movement.
c Clears all selected products.
C Clears selected products in the current product class.
a Automatically selects all out-of-date products and
clears all previously selected products.
A Automatically selects out-of-date products in the
current product class and clears all previously selected
products in that class.
h Accesses help for downloading individual products.
e Exits.
<Back Space>, or <Delete>
In multimenu mode, returns to the previous menu.

/ product Searches for product name. If the product name is not
specified, newprod/makenode finds the next occurence of
the last name specified.
<Ctrl-L> Refreshes the screen.
The newprod menu contains the following special characters:
* Product does not require a load key when installing from CD/ROM.
> Product's load key has already been entered.
= Product is a BOM product (references other products).
~ Product is intended to be invisible; referenced by a BOM product.
When used non-interactively, newprod and makenode obtain the names of the
products to be installed from the command line. The following methods may
be used to specify products on the command line:
product number Refers to products to by their product number (license
number), such as SG01005.
product name Refers to products by their product name, such as
DELTOOLS.
product=fs Delivers product to a specific file systems. This
specification overrides any base file system that was
specified using the -b flag.
% product Loads product only if it is out of date.
u Refers to all out-of-date products.
! product Exempts product from being delivered, even if the u
command us used and the product is out of date.
Invoked with no flags, newprod and makenode prompt for any required
information. The newprod and makenode utilities determine software
products available for installation based on the contents of the product
list file. The product list file contains a series of records, one per
installable product. Each record uses the following format:
number#title#date#size#srcdir#destdir#priority#name#version#class#attributes#platforms
These fields have the following meanings:
number Intergraph-assigned software license number of the

title Title of the product.
date Release date of the product (see product.def(4)).
size Size of the product.
srcdir Location on the Intergraph VAX, workstation, tape,
CD/ROM, or floppy disk where that product is stored.

a time.

are not available for the platform on which newprod is
running. The makenode utility will accept and display
products for all platforms by default, but can be limited
to particular platforms using the -a flag.
FILES

source.
NOTES
