SETROOT(8) GENIX Programmer's Manual SETROOT(8)
NAME
setroot - fix file system ownership and protection
SYNOPSIS
/etc/setroot [-v] [-S]
DESCRIPTION
Setroot traverses the file system, forcing correct ownership and
protection for directories and files as it does so. Setroot may be
run at any time so long as the -S flag is not given. Flags recog-
nized are as follows:
-v Verbose mode causes setroot to announce its actions.
-S This flag enables setroot to make changes, such as fixing /dev,
that should be done only when the system is running single
user.
Setroot will fail if not run by root.
SEE ALSO
chmod(1), chgrp(8), chown(8)
DIAGNOSTICS
Fatal errors include not being able to execute chmod(1), ls(1),
wc(1), grep(1), chgrp(8), and chown(8) and the non-existence of cer-
tain special users and groups.
Non-fatal errors include: file not found, not a directory (directory
does not exist or is a non-directory file type), is empty (a direc-
tory does not contain any files), unable to set (cannot access a
directory to set its contained files).
Setroot exits with status 0 if all sets were successful, and 1 if an
error was detected.
BUGS
Setroot error messages are sent to standard output and not standard
error.
Setroot has too much information hard-wired into it. Instead, it
should be driven from an auxiliary table of files, modes, and per-
missions. It will be modified or replaced in a later GENIX release.
